first_img Related Stories The University of Georgia will soon open a college of engineering after gaining unanimous approval from school officials this week.The college will officially open its doors in July and classes in the school will start in August.  Pete Konenkamp is a spokesman for the university.“The most important thing is that it will give more an opportunity to remain in the state of Georgia rather than seek a degree elsewhere.”Konenkamp says before adding the college, the university offered an engineering program in its college of agriculture. He says the new college is not intended to compete with Georgia Tech.“I really don’t see this as anything that would threaten Georgia Tech. We just want to add to that compliment and enhance the engineering programs offered in the state of Georgia.”UGA currently has 600 engineering undergraduates. The university is expecting that number to grow by at least 100 this fall.
